I've 'done' a wedding (it was actually a blessing ceremony as the couple had got married in Italy a month or so earlier) as the official photographer and I can safely say it's the first and last time! The whole day was one big bundle of stress right from worrying about CF failures to making sure each shot was exposed correctly and trying to herd cats for formal groups. Oh, and posing people is harder than you think too. None of this was helped by the pictures they had on display of their wedding in Italy which were fantastic! As it happened, the pics turned out fine, the couple were happy and I was shocked at just how good the album they got made from my shots was.

As Aidy says, think carefully before saying yes. I've seen some photographers both pro and amateur make some awful mistakes at weddings over the years. His tips are pretty sound and if you do take the plunge and say yes remember to prepare properly!

Adrian, interesting write-up, thanks. Entirely agree with one of your general themes - if you aren't the official photographer, you should forget about butting in when you're not welcome. Everyone and his dog seems to have a DSLR these days, and it doesn't matter how good one thinks they are - that's the bride and groom's call.
